MS Students Connect with Pen Pals from South Africa
5th grade students established a pen pal program with Middleburg Primary School in Mpumalanga, South Africa earlier this year. The reactions from our kids have been phenomenal.
Teagan James, on a family trip to South Africa in March, had the opportunity to personally deliver books and hand made tie-dyed T-shirts to their pen pals. Teagan brought back photos with the pen pals wearing their new shirts and holding their books (see photo gallery).Melissa Zammitti summed the significance of this project when she said, “I learned that you can be friends with someone across the world, even though you have never met in person.”
Earth Month was a Bed of Roses for MS Students
The 7th/8th grade Green Science class worked diligently on their organic garden throughout the month of April. The students are already starting to see the fruits of their labor as the plants are starting to grow.
The class would like to thank all those who helped start this green initiative: Ron Danise, speaker on soil eco-systems and environmental awareness; Al from Carolina Garden Systems for donation of the raised bed; and Mary Roberts of Windcrest Farms for donation of organic lettuce. A special thank you goes to Mark Tyburski of Circle Organics who organized the educational program, donations and deliveries. Please go to www.circleorganics.com to learn more about organic living.
Time for Spring Cleaning
Our 5th and 6th grade students will host a food and clothing drive to benefit the Mooresville Soup Kitchen and Hope Worldwide in May. They will collect food and gently used clothing of all types, including shoes, until May 12th. To cap off the drive, our students will spend the day at the Mooresville Soup Kitchen volunteering to assist those less fortunate. Please be sure to support this effort with your donations.
