ALL-SCHOOL NEWS
Field Day Fun Next Week
A reminder that Field Day activities will be held in the morning on Wednesday, May 11 for ECH and LS students and Thursday, May 12 for MS students. Please send your children to school in gym clothes along with a change of clothes in case they get wet. Students should wear sunscreen and bring water bottles. Water stations will be spread throughout the field so students can stay hydrated. MS students have been assigned a color for the day and should wear something (shirt, shorts, bandana, etc.) with that color on Thursday. Click here to see your child’s assigned color.
Important SummerFest Wristband and Parking Information
Next Wednesday, May 11 is the last day to buy $15 SummerFest wristbands and charge them to your Patriot account. After that, the price goes up to $20 and only cash, check or credit cards will be accepted. Wristbands are required for admission and include dinner, the bounce inflatables, volleyball and face painting. Additional forms are available at the Front Desk or by clicking here. Completed forms and payment must be turned in by Tuesday, May 17.
SummerFest is Wednesday, May 18 from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Even if you don’t plan to attend SummerFest, please make note of these important carpool changes that day:
- The campus parking lot will be closed the entire day May 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. immediately after morning carpool.
- There is NO afternoon carpool that day. Everyone must park in the Childress Klein lot by Sabi Asian Bistro (we have permission) or on Jetton Street and walk to pick up students. There will be one pick-up line for parents taking their children to SummerFest and one line for parents bringing children directly home. Please follow signs for directions. Children will not be called for release unless their parent is at the appropriate pick-up line.
- Please email Jeanette Pietro and Katherine Noble if your child will be picked up by someone who is not their parent. Students will not be released to people other than their parents without this email.
Thank you for your help in keeping our campus safe.
The SummerFest auction is sure to be an exciting part of the afternoon and help raise needed funds to support our school. From a spa basket to a handmade picnic blanket and an outdoor living package to a vacation in Myrtle Beach, you will be impressed with the variety and creativity of the items that will be up for bid. Special thanks to the donors listed below for their support and to all Room Parents and Parent Liaisons for their hard work on this event. For questions about the SummerFest Celebration please contact Whitney Yates or Julie Bennett.

Caroline Spiggle Qualifies for Duke TIP
Caroline Spiggle ‘19 has qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program and is eligible to register for their Talent Search Program based on her scores on a national test. Congratulations, Caroline.
Students Serving the Community
Noah Steiner ’17 collected and donated 170 pounds of dry dog food, 70 pounds of dry cat food, 20 cans of wet cat food, 14 bags of dog treats, 34 pet toys, 40 pounds of cat litter and $20 in gift cards to the Cornelius Animal Shelter. Thank you to everyone in the DDS community who contributed to his efforts by bringing in donations.
Elizabeth Earp ’20 worked with some friends at the Style Sanctum studio to create a T-shirt as a fundraiser for Japan tsunami relief. Click here to view and order the shirt. Available in child and adult sizes. Shirts can be shipped or contact Karen Earp to have your shirt delivered to school.
Sixth-graders Alex Sabates, Will Mitchell and Graysen Pomykata represented the school at a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Davidson College last week that raised money for the BUZZKILL Foundation. The boys raised $1,050, the third-highest amount out of more than 20 teams, for organizations that help prevent malaria in Africa. And they even met NBA player and Davidson grad Stephen Curry.
AP Chemistry Students Go the Extra Mile
AP Chemistry students spent the past month meeting before school every morning and three hours each Saturday to prepare for this week’s final national exam. Dorian Albritton ’12 said the class was hard, but often fun. “The labs are very interesting and you learn many different things within these labs.” Said Rachel Bringewatt ’14, “AP Chemistry is definitely the hardest class I've taken so far. Although it was a lot of work, it was fun when I finally felt confident that I knew how to approach a kinetics or equilibrium problem. Everyone in the class helped each other out, and Mr. Laatsch was always willing to give me extra practice or review outside of class.”
Teacher Brad Laatsch praised the group for their hard work, saying, “There were several students whose nightly homework load for the course wasn’t enough and I was met the next day with ‘I’ve finished last night’s stuff, can I have more?’ Scholars in every sense of the word.” Congratulations, Students, on your dedication and determination to succeed.
Free Physicals for 2011-2012 Student Athletes
Is your child planning to play interscholastic sports for DDS next year? For the first time, our athletic training partners at Presbyterian Hospital are offering free physicals for rising 5th graders through rising 12th graders. Every student on a DDS athletics team is required to have a physical to participate next school year. The free physicals will be offered on “DDS Night” Tuesday, May 17 at Lakeside Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, 10030 Gilead Road in Huntersville across from Presbyterian-Huntersville. Athletes may show up between 5:30-6:15 p.m. with appointments on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations are necessary. To receive a physical, students must complete all the information on this form and have it signed by a parent. Lakeside will create electronic records of these forms that the trainers can access on the field during sporting events. Please contact Director of Athletics Tim Weir with any questions.

ATHLETICS
Boys Golf Wins School’s First Conference Tournament Championship
On Monday, in their first year as an US program the Boys Varsity Golf Team became Davidson Day’s first SPAA Conference Tournament Champion in any sport. Led Kyle Fuller ’14, the Boys defeated United Faith Christian, Victory Christian Center, Statesville Christian and Gaston Day by four strokes at Rock Barn Country Club in Conover. Kyle was tied going into the last hole and then parred the hole (a par 5) as his competitor double bogeyed. Kyle was the tournament’s low scorer and medalist. The Patriots’ efforts were also aided by Ronnie Uszenski ’16 whose round of 64 was the third lowest overall score. This week, Kyle also learned he has been selected to play in the prestigious Future Masters tournament this summer in Dothan, Ala. The team has qualified for the state tournament May 9-10 in Southern Pines, an enormous accomplishment for a first-year Varsity program. Congratulations, Gentlemen, for making DDS proud.
Girls Soccer Advances to Conference Final
Our No. 1-ranked Girls Soccer team advanced to the SPAA Conference Championship game at Wolter Field at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 with the defeat of United Faith Christian Academy, 7-0, yesterday, which included three goals by Maddy Clark ’13. The team has the highest scoring offense in Mecklenburg County with 113 goals for the season. Bri Wills ’11 leads the nation with 62 goals this season. Great work, Patriots.
