Curriculum Nights Launch Successful
Start to the School Year
From Early Childhood to Upper School, parents both new and old, attended Curriculum Night this past week to get a feel for all that is in store for their children this year. Parent comments like “phenomenal,” “awesome,” and “wow” were exchanged freely in the classrooms and hallways. Teachers, too, said the same things about our parents and our kids. We are off to a great start!
The Revolution has Begun
This summer the yearbook, Revolution, won 2nd place in photography and an overall Distinction award from the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association. NCSMA is a state-wide student journalism association, operating out of UNC Chapel Hill. We are very proud of our Upper School students and their solid publication, putting DDS on the student journalism map.
Revolution is in its third year at DDS, and books are currently on sale for $40. You may email Amy Hallman with your order or use online ordering with Jostens. Please contact Amy Hallman with questions at ahallman@davidsonday.org

Reminder about DDS Car Clings
This school year, the Town of Davidson Police Department has asked that the administration create numbered car clings to identify staff, family, and student cars. Each DDS family has two assigned car clings that must be placed on the lower left corner of your windshield, and these will help the administration and the police ensure that your car is permitted to drive in and park in our school lot. If you have not yet received your family's car clings or need an additional car cling, please pick them up at the reception desk at your earliest convenience.
New Sign-In Procedure
There is a new sign-in table that has been set up to help identify parents/visitors more readily. If you are staying in the building (past the front office area), please sign-in at the “Visitors” book and wear the name tag.
If you are picking up your student or dropping off you student while school is in session, then the student needs to be signed in/out on the “Student” sign-in clip board. The clip board that says “Parent Sign-In Ms Farrah’s Class” is ONLY for Ms. Farrah’s half day dismissal students. Please note that at large events (performances, etc.) you will not need to sign in.

Omar Caldwell Receives Media Attention
When it comes to the definition of a quality student-athlete, you don’t have to look any further than our very own Omar Caldwell. The Charlotte Post wrote an article on the exemplary humanitarian service that Omar does with children in West Africa while starring as an all-conference goalie in soccer. One look at the article and it will help validate the wonderful integrity Omar shows on the field and off the field. Click here to read the article
Meagan Waldrip and Kat MacLeod Take Biology to the Next Level
While many students spent their summer traveling, shopping, and waterskiing, Meagan Waldrip and Kat MacLeod had a very unique summer of their own. Meagan spent the summer interning at UNCC’s Department of Biology. She worked with graduate students on several different projects such as creating buffers for experiments, as well as maintaining the upkeep on equipment designed for field study.
Kat spent her summer interning at the North Carolina Research campus in Kannapolis. Her internship was quite challenging as she studied polymerase chain reaction; which is a replication of DNA. “Interning with the NC Research campus was an amazing experience,” said Kat. “Having this experience made me realize that I definitely want to work in a lab when I establish my career. It’s something that I love doing.”
Congratulations to both Meagan and Kat on a job well done!
A Slumdog Success
Last Friday night was the first Upper School Social Night. Approximately 15 students watched Slumdog Millionaire and enjoyed pizza and soda with their friends.

Lower School News
Practice Makes Perfect
This week, for the first time in school history, the Lower School were the first group of students to test out the new side-wall basketball hoops in the gym. The PE teachers were able to witness some future basketball stars in the making! With the ability to lower the rings to 8ft, our lower school students can now fully develop their skills, understanding and knowledge of the game. In just a few weeks time, all lower school students will be gearing up for the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge. DDS students continue to shine in this challenge as our students become stronger, faster and jump higher!
It’s All About Courage
All 4th graders thoroughly enjoyed the book “Courage” by Bernard Waber. This book introduces to readers the concept that there are many different levels of courage: awesome courage, everyday courage, the courage to say no and many more. The book is nicely illustrated and serves as a very nice reminder to kids that it’s great to have courage in difficult times.

Football at Davidson Day Gets Kicked Off in a Major Way
The Middle School Football team won their first game in team history by defeating Statesville Christian School 20-6. Backed by a large and spirited contingent of fans, the team just refused to be denied. Congratulations to the coaching staff and the entire team on an impressive win.
Davidson Day Athletics Get Involved With the Community
Members of the Davidson Day School varsity volleyball and boys’ soccer teams offered a helping hand recently to the Ada Jenkins Center, working in the Loaves & Fishes food pantry and preparing classrooms for the center’s after-school program. Both teams were profiled in last Friday’s edition of the Lake Norman Citizen for their community service. This is a great example of how our student-athletes exemplify great character both on and off the court.
