News 14 Carolina Profiles Tennis Prodigy Jenny Falcone
News 14 Carolina ran a story on our very own Jenny Falcone (11th Grader), a phenomenal tennis player who is ranked #2 in the state (girls 18-under) and in the top-50 nationwide. News 14 Carolina did a quality job profiling a quality person. Jenny is a great role model to all of our students and we are very proud to have her in the Davidson Day family.

DDS Lunch Program
Our school is proud to offer our students high quality, nutritious lunch selections each day through the partnership we have with various food vendors and restaurants. For these restaurants to service our School, however, they hold us to specific requirements related to ordering deadlines – requirements that we must hold our families to. Your help and cooperation with the following rules will enable us to keep our wonderful lunch program growing and available to all students. (Click Here for Lunch Program Rules and Deadlines)

8th Grade Geography Classes go Head to Head
The 8th Grade Geography classes began what will be a year-long class competition to review and anticipate information for their Geography class.   Students are given questions to answer in a Family Feud style game where they can show off their knowledge and win points towards their overall point total.  The class with the most wins each quarter will be rewarded a special lunch.  This week’s match-up went down to the wire as Mr. Tobias’ class scored a narrow victory over Ms. Buechler’s class.

Middle School goes Clubbing

The implementation of clubs has generated a lot of excitement in Middle School. Whether it’s Photography, Music, Chess or any number of our other exciting clubs being offered, our Middle School kids can now be a part of these fun activities beginning in September.

Lower School News

Building Blocks to Success
Kindergarten has been hard at work learning new rules and routines. Their Math Centers have been a big hit exploring and learning about pattern blocks. They’ve also been busy creating rocket ships, flowers, castles, and more using hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, triangles, and squares (see Roundabout photo gallery).  They will continue to learn valuable problem solving skills as our hands-on centers change on a weekly basis.

Spanning the Globe

The Eaglets have been very active in discussing parts of the globe. The students are learning that we live in the state of North Carolina and the name of our country is the United States of America. They have also been counting the stars and stripes on our beautiful American flag and they have been practicing the Pledge of Allegiance since the 1st day of school!

Montessori’s Quick Learning is Earth Shattering

This week in Montessori, students have been learning about our planet "Earth" and where we live.  The children have been introduced to the way the earth travels around the sun and how long that rotation takes. Every child who celebrates a birthday this year will "travel" around the sun for how many years old they are.

Davidson Middle School Football Takes the Local Community By Storm

As the only resource in the Town of Davidson where you can watch scholastic football, the Davidson Middle School Football team has truly been the talk of the town. After winning their first game in team history, Davidsonnews.net wrote a feature article highlighting their recent success. This past Tuesday, they continued their winning ways by defeating Carmel Baptist 14-0. The team will attempt to go 3-0 as they return home next Thursday, September 10th, as they take on Northside Christian Academy. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Running for Glory
The DDS Middle School Cross Country team opened the season this past Monday with an impressive performance against the highly regarded Woodlawn team. The cooler temperatures, coupled with a challenging course, set the stage for some close competition and great performances.

In perhaps one of the closest team races in the last few years, 5th Grader Melissa Zammitti dominated the girls’ race with an individual victory, covering the challenging two mile course in a blistering time of 15:34. Rachel Bringewatt (8th Grade), Emmy Roberts (8th Grade) and Hannah Wolter (6th Grade) all performed well to post a team score of 19 points, only 1 point behind Woodlawn who finished with 18.

Jake Bringewatt (8th Grade) was the first Patriot home in the boys race, covering the two mile distance in 14:35. Duncan Hammond (7th Grade), Luke Sullivan (8th Grade) and Ben Roberts (6th Grade) all ran strong races to finish with a team score of 31, trailing Woodlawn who finished with 12 points. The next meet is on Wednesday, September 9th at Fisher Farm.

MS and Varsity Volleyball Teams Win Big in Home Opener

Playing their first ever volleyball match at home in their own gym was a big enough thrill for the MS and Varsity volleyball teams. But winning their matches in exciting fashion against the talented Victory Christian squad made the home showing even sweeter. The MS team won
2-0; and the Varsity team won 3–1.

This win for our Varsity team comes on the heels of a couple cancelled games early in the season, and a big win last week over United Faith, 3-0. The Patriots are now 3–1 on the season with their next game, Tuesday, September 8th at Shannon Forrest. With 11 games left in the season, the Varsity team has already tripled their win total from last year. Congratulations to both teams on taking Patriot volleyball to the next level!

Middle School Soccer Team Tripped Up by Woodlawn

In their first game of the season, the MS soccer team suffered a defeat to Woodlawn 8-1. “I was really proud of our team effort,” said assistant coach Jennifer Yarbrough. “There were a few of our players that stepped on the field for the first time ever. So with that being said, I feel they played well and will certainly benefit from this experience.”

Davidson Day Tennis Aces Southlake Christian
The Varsity tennis team continued their winning ways yesterday by defeating Southlake Christian with an impressive score of 9-0. “All of the girls played exceptionally well,” said head coach Devin Gracely. “I was really pleased with Katie Burr’s performance yesterday. She was aggressive throughout her match and never lost confidence." The team’s overall record is 2-1 and they will look to increase their winning streak to three in a row as they take on First Assembly next Thursday, September 10th at River Run. The match starts at 3:30 p.m.

Yates at whitneyyates@bellsouth.net.

Used Uniform Closet
Thanks to everyone who donated their gently used school uniforms for our first Used Uniform Closet Sale of the school year.  We raised over $750.00 which will go to our Annual Fund!  We will have another uniform sale in the winter so please keep those uniform donations coming!  The uniform collection bin will be moved to the AEC exit doorway located at the end of the Early Childhood Wing.  For more information, please contact Sheila Brady at lmbsmom@bellsouth.net.

Harris Teeter and Davidson Day Team-up for Education

Harris Teeter's Together in Education program has kicked off for the 2009-2010 school year.  They will donate 2% of all Harris Teeter brand purchases to our school for each VIC card that is linked to Davidson Day.

This program starts fresh every September and lasts through May, so if you have linked your VIC card in the past, you will need to RE-link it for this school year.

It is FREE and only takes a minute to register in one of three ways:

1. Send your VIC card # to Deanne James, or
2. Register by going to the Harris Teeter website and using our school code (Davidson Day's school code is 3520)

OR

3. Next time you are in Harris Teeter, tell the cashier that you want to link your VIC card to School # 3520.

Please pass this along to your family and friends who shop at any Harris Teeter in the Southeastern United States and might also be willing to link to our school. The more cards we have linked to Davidson Day, the more funds Harris Teeter will contribute to the betterment of our school!

Volunteer News

Patriots Serve the Panthers with Pride
Starting with an All-Star crew of volunteers for the Panthers/Ravens Game (Manzullo family, Fischer family, Cusick family, Allison Dunham, and Kim Garrett), Davidson Day began a relationship with the Food Service department of the Carolina Panthers.  Davidson Day will man the Dominos Pizza booth by Section 117 for every home game this year.

Again - WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE!  12 volunteers are needed for each game.  Please sign up on the posters (in front of the Commons) for at least one game.  Davidson Day School receives a portion of all proceeds, and it is great publicity for the school.

Concession Volunteers Needed for Home Games

Davidson Day School and the Patriots Athletic Club are in need of volunteers for after school concessions and all home sports games.  Please check your calendars and show your Patriot pride by volunteering!  You should contact Heidi Uszenski (Co-chair, Concessions) at 704-962-9929 or hju62@mi-connection.com to sign up.

Lastly, we wish you and your family a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!  We will see you on Tuesday, September 8th.
